A CHALLENGE FOR EVERY LEADER

"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say “I.”  And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say “I.”  They don’t think “I.” They think “we;” they think “team.”  They understand their job to be to make the team function.  They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but “we” gets the credit . . . This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.”

-Peter F. Drucker

Delivering on the value “WE” means achieving superior communications, yet managing your team is often tough and complex. Understanding yourself and understanding the individuals on your team is a core principle of good communication. Knowing people well enough to speak their language takes time.  If you’re constantly using your energy to put out the “fires” of day-to-day management, how are you to find time to plan and build your team and your company?

In working with hundreds of different companies and CEOs, we know that the ability of a company to pull together is what is truly important. By working with thousands of people, we’ve discovered that there are characteristics, ideas and disciplines that, if used, give you the best chance of working together.  We refer to those concepts as HEART, which consists of five components: Honesty in all communications; setting clear Expectations; holding people Accountable consistently at every level; being able to develop a true Respect; and what emerges is a deep Trust in your people, thus creating a winning team.  When you combine HEART with effective, ongoing communication, leaders learn to Coach with HEART. In other words, Coaching With HEART ™ identifies five key ingredients to successful business:

  • Honesty: Operating with integrity by delivering performance-based feedback, adhering to factual information, and avoiding the use of misleading or deceitful statements.
  • Expectations: Knowing, with a high level of certainty, what one wants to accomplish or the outcomes they wish to achieve which are considered bound by obligation.
  • Accountability: Holding others to their obligations, accepting responsibility for one’s actions, and receiving and delivering consequences.
  • Respect:  An appreciation for all employees by valuing each person’s contributions, thus creating a mutual state of high regard.
  • Trust: Permitting another to fulfill obligations with confidence in their character, abilities, and strengths without fear or misgivings.

To win and build the needed structure, we must embrace ideas and tools that are new and innovative.  For today’s business challenges and this economic recovery we need leaders to show up, suit up and become winning coaches.  Coaching with HEART™ is leadership in action, the foundation of winningThese are the simple components that make the Coaching With HEART™ system so successful.
